The ONUS is On Us to do our Part (By Ryan Hayes, RMT)

We hope everybody is safe and in good health amidst this era of global uncertainty

and unrest.  This is an unprecedented time in our history.  Things we take for granted have been disturbed.  Our daily routines have been thrown into turmoil.  Our sense of control and freedom have been temporarily removed: our ability to roam without restriction has replaced with being confined to our residence.  Some of us work. Some of us don't. Under these circumstances, it is easy to become lethargic, idle, socially isolated and disconsolate.

Further, many people live in pain.  At present, most people don't have access to the same resources to help them battle this pain.  Healthcare workers have been ordered to close their doors. People have been left with minimal connection to their previous health networks.  People have injuries. People will continue to receive injuries. Who can these people turn to for help? We want you to know that you are not forgotten.  You are not alone. Whether you are an existing client or a new client there is help available.

“What can we do to counteract some of this restlessness?”

“How can we stabilize our mental and physical health?”

During this time of segregation, much information has flooded onto social media providing methods of staying limber, improving our ergonomics, building strength and flexibility, and reducing stress.  Much of this information is a valuable material. However, it is worth keeping in mind that many of these exercises are aimed at the healthy individual who isn't limited by pain, pathology, or injury.  In some cases, these activities that are restorative for a healthy individual can lead to more discomfort and symptomatic presentation for those living with pain. At a time when control seems out of our hands, health is one area where we can begin to regain control.

At MOA Living there is a team of healthcare professionals who can help create and monitor a daily routine for you based on your specific needs.  This team consists of physiotherapists, a kinesiologist, and personal trainers of various backgrounds. Whether you want either improvements in ergonomics, a physical workout, or exercises to help with the alleviation of pain, there are people who want to help you turn the tide of powerlessness.  A mind occupied by pain cannot maintain focus on more important tasks. Now is the time to pay attention to ourselves. For the fortunate who retain good health at this time of suffering, thoughts should turn to prevention and fortifying our health.

Moaliving Physio-Massage Clinic offers virtual assessment and virtual training.  With a combined experience exceeding a century, we are confident that help those in need can be provided through this virtual medium.  It is worth remembering that a modality by itself is only as effective as the individual who utilizes it. Now more than ever the onus is on us to do our part of the work.  We cannot rely on the hands-on care of others. However, we can gain knowledge and guidance through the expertise of others to gain control of our own health. By learning breathing techniques,

stretches, and strengthening exercises now, we can instill a habit in isolation that we can rely upon when our doors reopen.

Weekly virtual classes are currently available for those wishing to participate in Zumba or stretching at home.  Individual appointments for personal training or physiotherapy services can be booked online. Telephone inquiries can be made to 647-247-6004.  At a time when social distancing has become obligatory, getting in touch with ourselves must be a priority.

We are here to help you through this.  Pain does not have to be suffered alone.  Reach out. Take control of your body and your mind.  The power resides within you.

In health,
